The Sainte-Clotilde Clinic inaugurates its Support Oncology Care Unit

A reference and high-tech center for cancer treatment in Réunion, the Oncology-Radiotherapy Center of the Sainte-Clotilde Clinic, which has existed for more than 52 years, has comprehensive cancer care (Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy , Carcinological surgery, Oncological medicine service, Palliative Care Unit).

It ensures the improvement of the health of the population through its commitment to clinical research activity, and through the innovative therapies it offers: hormone therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy in volumetric arc therapy by modulation of intensity and radiotherapy in stereotactic conditions, notably using its latest generation radiotherapy equipment: the TrueBeam accelerators and the Cyberknife, a radiosurgery robot.

Since June 2022, the cancer care offer has been reinforced by the structuring of support care within a new Oncological Support Care Unit (USOS), which was recently inaugurated in the presence of Professor KRAKOWSKI, President of AFSOS. - French Association of Oncological Support Care.

The Support Oncology Care Unit (USOS):

Supportive care is defined as “all the care and support necessary for sick people during and after illness”. They have been implemented at the Clinique Sainte-Clotilde for many years through professionals such as the psycho-oncologist, the socio-esthetician, the dietician, etc.

The USOS brings structuring by proposing:

  • A specific place, distinct from the places of treatment (chemotherapy, radiotherapy), welcoming and pleasant. The goal is for the patient to feel good and free from the stress of treatment. The premises are located on the 5th floor of the clinic. They include 4 care boxes, 1 room for photo-biomodulation, 1 waiting room, 1 secretariat and 1 doctor's office. The patient does not change cubicles; it is the professionals who come to meet him.
  • An organization of care: 6 half-days bringing together 4 to 5 different professionals are offered in order to respond as much as possible to the different patient profiles: breast cancer, onco-geriatrics, etc.
  • A wider range of support care by welcoming external professionals to the site who bring their skills: breast physiotherapist, podiatrist, Adapted Physical Activity (APA) monitor, etc.

The care starts from the medical announcement consultation by an oncologist carried out at the beginning of the course of chemotherapy. The patient is then welcomed to the Oncological Support Care Unit where he will be presented with a Personalized Care Program (PPS), determined with the oncologist and the support care professionals. This is implemented from the start of treatment. It takes into account the diversity of needs according to the profile of the patient as well as that of his entourage.

The patient followed in the USOS has access to a multidisciplinary team:

  • Oncologist
  • Algologist specialized in oncological pain
  • Infectiologist, in particular for the verification of the vaccination schedule
  • Photobiomodulation nurse: This technique uses red and infrared light to help heal the side effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy for which it allows a faster decrease in side effects. It has 3 effects: anti-inflammatory, analgesic and healing.
  • Announcement nurse
  • Social worker (Social support)
  • Dietitian for nutrition
  • Psycho oncologist
  • Socio-aesthetician
  • APA teacher for Adapted Physical Activity
  • Pharmacy assistant (adherence consultation)
  • Rehabilitation and functional rehabilitation professionals (breast physiotherapist, psychomotor therapist, podiatrist)

A specific communication medium is given to the patient and presents the different professions of the USOS multidisciplinary team as well as the city network essential in the continuity of care. This coordination of follow-up and treatment between the clinic and the external network finalizes the care and possibly makes it possible to direct the patient in remission in post-cancer pathways: mobility in specialized rehabilitation, etc.
